Getting there

Chapter start › Five new reflections › Little Tokyo: Immermannstraße

Start on the pavement at Immermannstraße and Oststraße in the Japanese quarter. Step away from traffic towards the public shopfronts and find Japanese writing on a sign; no restaurant entry or purchase is needed.

The required observation is from a public area. Do not cross barriers during a temporary closure.

History

Japanese companies and community life shaped this part of post-war Düsseldorf around Immermannstraße. Bookshops, food shops and restaurants show that architects are not the only makers of a cityscape. Observe from the pavement and respect visitors’ privacy.
