Essen before and after coal

Essen did not begin as a mine: its early history centres on a ninth-century community of religious women. The cathedral and nearby streets preserve a city of authority, belief and exchange long before industry.

Industrial growth changed its scale. Zollverein reveals extraction and processing as a connected system, while today’s museums begin a new chapter. The two walks occupy separate districts; travel between them by a separate journey rather than an obligatory long walk.

The atlas’s plot assignments are fictional. The synagogue, communities and history of labour call for respectful observation; game progress does not replace understanding.
