Essen Cathedral
Which material defines the historic church exterior?

Getting there
Old Synagogue › Old Synagogue › Essen Cathedral
Walk west along Burgplatz towards the cathedral ensemble. Use the public paths to the Münsterkirche-Dom information point on its west side; observe from outside by the entrance, not during a service inside.
The required observation is from a public area. Do not cross barriers during a temporary closure.

History
Essen grew around a community of religious women founded in the ninth century. The cathedral preserves the legacy of that foundation: the city mattered long before mines and factories. Its western part retains a medieval language of stone, arches and towers.
