What can you see at the top of the red steel headframe?

Getting there
Chapter start › Coal turned into culture › Zollverein Shaft XII
This is a separate district: take public transport to Zollverein, then follow signs to Schacht XII. Do not treat it as a walking continuation of the centre chapter. Start on the public plaza before the headframe.
The required observation is from a public area. Do not cross barriers during a temporary closure.

History
Shaft XII began operating in 1932. Architects Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer gave the industrial plant a disciplined rhythm of brick and steel. Its double headframe became a Ruhr emblem. The mine and coking plant entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.
