Annunciation Cathedral

Look closely at the white stone walls, then find the lookout behind the cathedral. Across the Kazanka you can see a very different part of the city.

History

A small wooden church stood here in 1552. Within ten years the Pskov masters Postnik Yakovlev and Ivan Shiryay had built a white stone cathedral. Inside its later additions, the original six-pier core survives. Fires and rebuilding changed its outline. The garden next door once held a five-storey bell tower around fifty metres high, dismantled in Soviet times. The cathedral was reconsecrated in July 2005 after years of restoration. Its historic lower floor now houses a museum.
