Resurrection Gate

From Manezhnaya you can see the two towers, both archways and the chapel in between. Stand to one side to keep the passage clear.

Retrace your steps to Theatre Square and cross to the Metropol side at the pedestrian crossing. Walk down Revolution Square towards Manezhnaya, passing the red former City Duma. Go around it to the western entrance of the gate, facing Manezhnaya.

Before the chapel, look down. A bronze marker in the cobbles is your first street discovery.

History

This was a passage through the wall of Kitay-gorod. A chapel stood between the gateways. Before a long journey, Muscovites would visit the Iveron icon here, giving the gate its other name, Iveron Gate. Both gate and chapel disappeared in the Soviet period. The ensemble you see was reconstructed in the 1990s. Pause before you enter the square. This is the side from which the little chapel is fully visible.
