Epiphany Cathedral Bell Tower
Step back to see the brickwork as a pattern. Through the arch you can glimpse the approach to the cathedral itself.

Getting there
Tukay Square › Bronze street clock › Pedestrian Bauman Street › Epiphany Bell Tower
From the clock, follow pedestrian Bauman Street towards the Kremlin. The red-brick bell tower rises above the shops and low façades. Approach its base directly from the street.
Pause by the statue of Fyodor Chaliapin next to the tower. The human figure puts the height of the belfry into perspective.

History
From Bauman Street, the red-brick tower comes into view before the Epiphany Cathedral behind it. Built in the 18th century, the church kept its old bell tower for almost another century and a half. Kazan merchant Ivan Krivonosov changed that. In 1892 he left the church 35,000 roubles, specifying that 25,000 should pay for a new belfry. The tower went up along the street frontage. Today you approach the cathedral through its arch. When the future opera singer Fyodor Chaliapin was baptised here in 1873, this tower did not yet exist.
