History
When Peter the Great visited Kazan in 1722, merchant Ivan Mikhlyayev decided to commemorate the visit by funding a stone cathedral on the site of the old parish church. By 1726 it stood here with a separate six-tier bell tower. Worshippers climbed the outdoor stairs to the upper church. In cold weather services took place in the heated church below. The stairs have a history of their own. By the late 19th century the ground beneath the building had settled unevenly, and one lost stairway had to be rebuilt during restoration.
