Getting there

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral › Musy Dzhalilya Street › Kremlyovskaya Street › Ushkova House › Main university building

Return to Musy Dzhalilya Street and continue uphill to Kremlyovskaya Street. Turn right, with the Kremlin behind you. Walk past Ushkova House to the semicircular space opposite the main university building.

Study the stucco at Ushkova House, 33 Kremlyovskaya Street. The university façade stretches out just across the road, making the two neighbours easy to compare.

History

Alexander I signed the charter founding Kazan University in 1804. The long colonnade familiar from postcards came later. Students first met in a former grammar school, and the university eventually acquired three neighbouring houses. In the 1820s Pyotr Pyatnitsky built the main building. Under rector Nikolai Lobachevsky, a library, chemistry laboratory and astronomical observatory rose behind it. Future doctors studied in a purpose-built anatomical theatre. A single long façade separates this whole little world of learning from the street.
