Lower Kaban Lake Embankment

First look across the lake from the upper promenade, then descend to the wooden boardwalk. From water level, look for reflections of the quarter’s houses.

Getting there

Apanayevskaya Mosque › Kayuma Nasyri Street › Kunche Lane › Shigabutdina Marjani Street › Lakeside amphitheatre

Retrace a few houses along Kayuma Nasyri Street and turn right into narrow Kunche Lane. Follow the brick fence to Shigabutdina Marjani Street. On the lake side, directly opposite the end of Kunche, walk to the viewing platform.

Sit on an amphitheatre step and compare the old quarter’s houses with the sharp edges of the theatre across the water.

History

Watch how people approach the water. From the upper promenade you can see the whole lake. On the wooden boardwalks the water is almost level with your feet. A Russian-Chinese team proposed this layout in its winning 2015 design. Called Elastic Ribbon, it imagined linking the three Kaban lakes with paths and planting. The first section along Salimzhanova Street opened in 2018, followed by the shore of the Old Tatar Quarter in 2020. A landmark easily recognised on a city map now comes within arm’s reach.
