Taynitskaya Tower
Walk through the gate and look back from the river side for the arrow slits and the heavy buttress against the outer wall.

Getting there
Söyembikä Tower › Sheynkmana Passage › Descent to the Taynitskaya Gate
At the palace gates, stay on the public Sheynkmana Passage. Follow the wall downhill to a squat white tower with a timber roof. This is the exit towards the Kazanka.
The passage turns inside the gate. Imagine trying to get a battering ram up to speed around that bend.

History
Kazan’s defenders drew drinking water from a spring reached by a secret passage. It was blown up during the siege of 1552. Pskov builders raised a new gate on the site of the ruined Nur-Ali Tower. At first it was named after the nearby Church of St Nicholas. Its present name recalls the secret spring. The passage bends inside, and the arrow slits face the Kazanka. An upper storey was added in the 18th century. When floods threatened the tower in the early 19th century, a massive stone buttress was built against its outer wall.
