Tukay Square

Find the clock at the beginning of Bauman Street and look out across the square. This is where people arrange to meet “at the Ring”.

Ploshchad Tukaya metro station in Kazan

Getting there

Ploshchad Tukaya metro station › Underpass beneath Pushkina Street › Start of Bauman Street › Clock on Tukay Square

In the metro underpass, follow signs to pedestrian Bauman Street. At street level, approach the large bronze clock. From there you can already see the street you will follow to the bell tower.

Walk around the clock. The scenes above its different faces change like illustrations in a book of Tukay’s poems.

History

When someone in Kazan suggests meeting “at the Ring”, they mean Tukay Square. Fishmongers once sold their catch here straight from carts, with horse-drawn cabs waiting nearby. The market gave the square its old name, Rybnoryadskaya, or Fish Row. Surrounding stone buildings held shops and rooms for travellers. The Muzurov Rooms, at today’s corner of Pushkina and Peterburgskaya streets, even housed a dining room and a cinema. Later, a tram loop allowed cars to turn around here. The tracks have gone, but Kazan still calls it the Ring.
