History
This square has seen three theatre façades. The first Petrovsky Theatre burnt down in 1805. Osip Bové’s new building opened in 1825 with a portico and Apollo’s chariot. When fire struck in 1853, the outer walls and colonnade survived. Albert Cavos rebuilt the theatre and the curtain rose again in 1856. Look at the roof. The team of horses you see today belongs to that last rebuilding.
