Hotel Metropol

Find the broad arch of colour just below the roof. Long lines lead your eye from both edges towards the figures at its centre.

Colourful ceramic panel above the hotel windows on Teatralny Proyezd

Getting there

Fountain outside the Bolshoi › Theatre Square › Teatralny Proyezd › Metropol façade

Turn towards the Maly Theatre and walk to Teatralny Proyezd. Follow the pavement towards Lubyanka. Stay on the Maly Theatre side for a view of the panel across the street.

The composition is easier to read from across the road than from the hotel doors. Take your photograph from the pavement.

History

Savva Mamontov planned the Metropol as a palace of the arts, complete with galleries, a hotel and an opera house seating three thousand. The opera hall never came to be. Instead, artists including Mikhail Vrubel and Alexander Golovin turned the façades into an outdoor exhibition. Look above the windows from Teatralny Proyezd for Vrubel’s Princess of Dreams. What looks like an enormous painting from across the road is actually assembled from fired ceramics.
