Getting there

Pashkov House › Mokhovaya Street › Vozdvizhenka Street › Arbatskaya Square

Return to the junction of Mokhovaya and Vozdvizhenka. Follow Vozdvizhenka away from the Kremlin to Arbatskaya Square, then use the signed underpass to reach the cinema.

The close-set façades of Vozdvizhenka give way to an open square. There is room for a short pause beside the cinema.

History

In the early days of cinema, films were often screened in rooms adapted for the purpose. In 1909 a purpose-built “electric theatre” opened on Arbatskaya Square. When its auditorium could no longer accommodate the crowds, Fyodor Schechtel enlarged it and redesigned the façade. The stucco decoration was removed in the mid-twentieth century. Restorers later used the architect’s drawings to recover the original appearance.
