Getting there

Intercession Cathedral fence › Varvarka Street › Church of Saint Barbara › Zaryadye park path

From the cathedral’s north side, head towards the start of Varvarka at Moskvoretskaya Street. Use the crossing and follow the pavement along the park, past Saint Barbara’s. Descend through an open park entrance and walk round the white house to its river-facing façade.

Pause on Varvarka above the park. From this level it is easy to see how low the chambers sit relative to the present street.

History

In the sixteenth century English merchants of the Muscovy Company settled in this house on Varvarka. They traded, entertained guests and stored goods here. After several changes of use, the upper chambers once again tell the story of trade between England and Muscovy. From the street this low house looks much like a residential estate. Walk round to the park side. The opening beneath the roof reveals the attic’s purpose.
