Saint Basil’s Cathedral

From the north, watch the pointed roof rise from the coloured domes. A few steps along the fence make the domes hide and reveal one another.

Getting there

Square by Spasskaya Tower › Red Square › Minin and Pozharsky Monument › Cathedral fence

Continue towards the coloured domes, staying above the roadway of Vasilyevsky Descent. Stop outside the fence by the Minin and Pozharsky Monument. Follow signed diversions around any temporary barriers.

Your next street discovery stands before the fence. Step back from the sculpture to fit both figures into one frame.

History

The Cathedral of the Intercession on the Moat was built in the sixteenth century after the capture of Kazan. What looks like a single fairytale palace is a group of churches linked by galleries. Eight surround the central Church of the Intercession. A church above the grave of Basil the Blessed was added later, giving the whole complex its familiar name. Start at the highest point, then trace the neighbouring domes to read the plan from outside.
