St Clement’s Church on Pyatnitskaya

Walk back along the lane until all the domes fit in your frame.

The red-and-white church with five domes on Klimentovsky Lane

Getting there

Novokuznetskaya metro, at the street-level rotunda › Pyatnitskaya Street › Klimentovsky Lane › Church fence

From the round metro entrance, follow Pyatnitskaya away from the city centre. Use the crossing by Klimentovsky Lane to reach the church side, then turn into the lane.

This is a good place to stop for coffee. As you walk along the pedestrian lane, the domes come into view between the low buildings.

History

A large Baroque church rises unexpectedly from this narrow lane. It was built by 1770 with funds from the merchant Kuzma Matveyev. The name recalls the old parish of St Clement, although the high altar was dedicated to the Transfiguration. The church closed during the Soviet period. In the twenty-first century, restorers brought back its intricate façade decoration.
