Look for the coat of arms high above the entrance and the band of lettering that runs across the façade.

Getting there

Convent gates › Bolshaya Ordynka › Bolshoy Tolmachyovsky Lane › Lavrushinsky Lane

Retrace your steps on the even-numbered side of Ordynka. Turn into Bolshoy Tolmachyovsky Lane and walk to the little garden with a fountain. Turn right into pedestrian Lavrushinsky Lane and continue to the gallery façade.

Take the lane slowly. The gallery roofs appear above the lower buildings well before you reach the entrance.

History

The paintings originally hung in the Tretyakov family home. As the collection grew, new galleries were added, and visitors came here during Pavel Tretyakov’s lifetime. After his death the buildings, put up at different times, received a common façade. A design by the artist Viktor Vasnetsov gave this little lane its instantly recognisable museum entrance.
